visitscotland

Fresh from being voted the most romantic destination in the UK, a new campaign is aiming to help visitors fall in love with Orkney this Autumn.

VisitScotland, in partnership with the Orkney Tourism Group and Orkney Islands Council, is using a combination of press and digital advertising to inspire people to take a trip to the islands later this year.

Aimed at visitors living in mainland Scotland and England, the activity is part of the national tourism organisation’s “Brilliant Moments Are Closer Than You Think” campaign.

As well as showcasing Orkney’s romantic side, the campaign will also highlight the history and heritage of the famous archipelagos, draw attention to its dramatic landscapes, celebrate its culinary delights and showcase the unique culture that makes a trip to Orkney so magical.

The campaign will be spreading the word abotu the diverse range of exciting events which are also due to take place on the islands in the latter part of the year, including the Storytelling Festival, from October 22 to 25,  to the winter solstice at the Ring of Brodgar.

In 2014, 64,000 trips were made to Orkney by visitors from Great Britain, with these visitors spending a total of ÂŁ25m. St Magnus Cathedral, the Italian Chapel and Skara Brae were among the most popular visitor attractions.

Kirsty Mainland, chairwoman of the Orkney Tourism Group, said: “Autumn is a wonderful time to enjoy Orkney, with the characteristic seasonal light lending a truly magical, and indeed romantic, quality to our island landscape.

“The days might gradually be growing shorter now as we move towards the Orkney winter – which has its own special appeal – but the autumn is an exceptional period, one where the visitor can achieve the perfect balance between outdoors and indoors activities.

“From days out visiting our incredible archaeological sites, to moonlit evening walks on the beach and nights spent enjoying our unrivalled food and drink, there are countless reasons to come to Orkney this autumn. We hope this new campaign will help get the message out that autumn in Orkney is genuinely unique and unforgettable.”
