War Memorial survey complete
The OIC’s development and marine planning team has completed a project to record details of all the war memorials in the county.
Forty war memorials were surveyed, including all the parish memorials and others which remember specific events and individuals. Details of each memorial were recorded, along with inscriptions and an assessment of their condition.
The project will help to support the commemorations of World War One, during which Orkney will play a key role.
Details of each war memorial can be found online at www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk and the Canmore Database canmore.org.uk. Both of these sites accept submissions from the public, allowing additional information and photographs to be added.
Tom Hunter, the council’s historic environment officer, carried out the surveying work.
He said: “The work was carried out throughout 2014 and the earlier part of this year. Orkney’s war memorials are generally in a good condition with most in need of no more than minor works. There’s a few that need a bit more care and we can provide community councils with information about possible sources of funding for this.”
