Warm, dry weather prompts fire reminder

The unseasonably warm and dry weather has prompted the Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service to issue a warning about fire.

A spokesman said: “Most fires attended by the service can be avoided and we would ask that landowners and members of the public refer to the following advice.

“Whether out hill walking, caravanning, lighting barbeques or campfires, members of the public should refer to the fire safety outdoors guidance on our website or visit the Scottish Wildfire Forum at www.scottishwildfireforum.org.uk.”

Landowners are asked to refer to the Muirburn Code before planning any burning and in particular ensure that burning is only undertaken when weather conditions are suitable and there are sufficient personnel to supervise, manage and control the fire.

Deputy assistant chief officer, Billy Wilson added “We would ask members of the public to ensure that no unnecessary burning of garden waste or rubbish is carried out in periods of very dry weather, such as we are experiencing at present, particularly when windy. If in doubt, please don’t start a fire.”
