Warnings issued over winter vomiting bug

NHS Orkney and Orkney Islands council have been working together to investigate an increase in cases of diarrhoea and vomiting in several schools and nurseries in Orkney.

According to NHS Orkney, although the overall number of people affected is low, it is higher than usual for the time of year. It is believed that the illness has also been circulating throughout the community in general.

“We know at this time of year Norovirus or “winter vomiting bug” may start circulating in the community,” explained Dr Derek Cox, consultant in Public Health with NHS Orkney.

“Norovirus can spread to others very easily so it is important that anyone who has diarrhoea or vomiting isolates themselves as far as is possible until 48 hours after the last episode.  This essentially means staying at home during this 48 hour period, avoiding mixing with others at work, school, leisure and sporting activities, including at weekends.”

Dr Cox added that washing your hands with warm water and soap, and cleaning surfaces with a bleach based product can help reduce the spread of infection.

“Although Norovirus can be unpleasant it usually clears up by itself in a few days,” he continued.

“You can normally look after yourself or your child at home, and so should avoid going to your GP or to the hospital, where you might spread the bug to others.  Obviously if you become concerned, this would be the time to contact your GP or NHS 24 (just dial 111)”

A spokesperson at Orkney Islands Council has reiterated calls by NHS Orkney, and has asked for the cooperation of parents in following public health advise on this matter.
