Waste water improvement work begins in Stromness

Scottish Water’s upgrade of Stromness waste water network aims to reduce the risk of pollution to harbour waters

Work on a ÂŁ10 million upgrade of the Stromness waste water network has started.

The project involves linking existing sewers to the Bu Point waste water treatment works (WWTW). This, says Scottish Water, will reduce the risk of pollution to the waters around the Stromness harbour.

The first part of the project involves construction of new manholes and sewer pipes at the pumping stations at the former West Mainland Mart and within the Ferry Road car park, between The Ferry Inn and Julia’s Café.

This will see restrictions to car parks and parking in the immediate area of the works. Alternative pedestrian routes will be in place and the construction area fenced off. Some localised traffic management may also be required at Ferry Road.

Project manager Kris Cameron, said: “This is a significant project to help protect and enhance the environment. It involves increasing the capacity and improving the performance of the seven existing pumping stations at Garson, West Mainland Mart, Ferry Inn, Navigation School, Sutherlands Pier, Graham Place and Alfred Street.

The first stage of work is expected to be completed by late spring, when attention will turn to the second phase, which will include increasing the capacity and improving performance of pumping stations at Garson, Navigation School, Sutherland’s Pier, Graham Place and Alfred Street and the construction of new sewers between Well Park and Garson.

Four new pumping stations will also be constructed at Well Park, Login’s Well, Gray’s Noust and Merriman’s Noust.
