West Mainland fly-tipping appeal
An appeal for information has been issued after black bags of domestic waste were found dumped at road sides in the Sandwick and Quoyloo areas of Orkney.
The illegal fly tipping is believed to have taken place over several months, with the most recent bag found on the Quoyloo road earlier this month.
Orkney Islands Council environmental health manager David Brown said: “There are adequate facilities in Orkney for the proper disposal of waste and it is very disappointing that someone feels it is acceptable to fly tip in the countryside like this.
“We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed fly-tipping in this area to get in touch with us and provide as much detail as possible to help us find whoever is responsible.
“It would be useful to know the date, time and location of the incident as well as information about any vehicle used.”
Mr Brown added: “The situation in the Sandwick area would be much worse if it wasn’t for the good will of local residents who have been removing and disposing of much of this waste. However, we would advise that if you come across fly-tipped waste, in this or any other area, leave it in place and contact Environmental Health.
“Anyone who has difficulty with their waste collection, for whatever reason, can contact the council to discuss the best option for their particular circumstances.”
It is an offence to deposit waste or knowingly cause waste to be dumped on any land without a licence.
Fly tipping is a serious offence that can result in a fixed penalty notice which is currently set at £50, but will rise to £200 on the April 1, 2014. Offenders may be prosecuted and that may lead to a fine of up to £40,000 and/or six months’ imprisonment.
Anyone with any information about these incidents is asked to contact Environmental Health at Orkney Islands Council on 873535 or email env.health@orkney.gov.uk
