Whit’s on this weekend
At a loss for what to do this weekend? Have no fear! The Orcadian is here with a few peedie suggestions…
Number Ones Night @ The Sound Archive
It’s set to be a night of bopping to chart toppers for folk in Kirkwall tomorrow evening, Saturday, as The Sound Archive hosts its first Number Ones Night, showcasing hits from the 1970s and 80s. Although not mandatory, there will be plenty of opportunity for folk to get themselves glitzed up in decade-appropriate attire.
A Window to their Worlds @ the Pier Arts Centre
A new exhibition, curated by students from Orkney College, recently opened at the Pier Arts Centre, Stromness.
A Window into their Worlds is a collection of drawings by Sylvia Wishart, Barbara Hepworth and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, selected from the Pier Arts Centre’s Permanent Collection. Curated by third year fine art students at Orkney College UHI Kelly Marwick, Ruth Tait and Sarah Wylie, this exhibition continues the Pier Arts Centre’s role in supporting Orkney’s emerging artists.
As part of their professional practice — a core part of their degree — the students were asked to curate an exhibition based on their interpretation of what defines a drawing. They chose to look at three female artists because their work has been particularly inspirational to their own art. In putting this exhibition together, the students hope to illustrate the artists’ very personal engagement with the landscape.
A Window into their Worlds is on display until Saturday, March 10.
New Members’ Evening @ Orkney Sailing Club
This Saturday night brings an opportunity for folk to try their hand at a new sport.
If you’ve been slacking on those New Year’s resolutions or you just fancy trying out something different, this evening at The Girnel, Kirkwall, presents the chance to find out more about what Orkney Sailing Club gets up to.
There will be information about the club and games to play as well, starting from 7.30pm.
