Orkney MSP Liam McArthur has welcomed confirmation from economy minister, Fergus Ewing, that the Scottish Government is actively supporting efforts to help those affected by the move into voluntary administration by Ortak.

Raising the issue at Holyrood this afternoon, Mr McArthur also highlighted the importance of ensuring that Ortak’s manufacturing base remains in the islands.

He said: “The news, last month, that Ortak was moving into voluntary administration was a shock to most, and concerns immediately turned to the fate of the company’s staff.  It was reassuring to hear from the minister that steps have been taken to provide whatever support is needed by those seeking alternative job opportunities in Orkney and elsewhere.

“While the situation is a bit clearer now, there is still uncertainty over what the future holds.  It is vitally important, however, that Ortak retains its manufacturing base in Orkney and this is something with which the minister was in agreement.

“Ortak is a strong brand with an excellent workforce, and I am hopeful that it also has a positive future in Orkney’s internationally-renowned jewellery sector.”
