The air and sea search which was launched this morning following reports of a Mayday call being picked up over VHF radio has been called off, with nothing untoward being found.

Lifeboats from both Stromness and Longhope were involved in the search of the Scapa Flow area, and a Coastguard search and rescue chopper was also tasked by the Coastguard to carry out a search of the Kirkwall and Shapinsay areas.

The spoken Mayday was picked up at 7.20am and the search began soon after. By 11.30am the lifeboats and helicopter were all stood down and returned to station.
