Beware bogus Office of Fair Trading bank refund offer

The OIC’s trading standards team are warning about scam callers claiming to be from the Office of Fair Trading in London.

The scammers claim they are authorised to refund overpaid bank charges to the value of £4,900 – but that to receive a cheque the individual must ring 0203 286 5687 and quote a unique reference number. Anyone doing so is instructed to send £100, by Western Union or Moneygram, to release the cheque.

Anyone receiving a call of this type is asked to report it to trading standards on 873535 or trading.standards@orkney.gov.uk.
