Carmichael voices export concerns

Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has reacted with concern to news that the US is set to introduce 25 percent tariffs on single malt Scotch whisky.

The new tariffs are set to come into force on October 18. Some have voiced fears that this could be a big blow to the Scotch whisky sector.

Mr Carmichael said: “To go from no tariffs to 25 percent in a crucial market, the US, represents a huge shock to the Scottish whisky industry. I am very concerned about the knock-on effects to Scottish distilleries, which directly employ 7,000 people in rural areas across the country.

“We have two world-class whisky distilleries in the Northern Isles, which have had great success exporting globally. We cannot allow this success to be undermined by new trade barriers.”

“Donald Trump likes to talk about his Scottish roots. It’s disappointing that he’s so opposed to letting his countrymen enjoy one of Scotland’s best exports.”
