Power to be restored by 4pm — SSEN

Homes and businesses in the centre of Kirkwall have been hit by a second major power outage in two weeks.

SSEN are currently working in the Albert Street area to restore power, which went off at 4.20am on Monday, cutting off supplies to many properties on Albert Street and Laing Street, among others.

Engineers hope to have the power restored by 4pm, after a fault on SSEN’s underground network.

The outage follows on from Saturday, August 15, where power supply were cut to many homes and businesses along Kirkwall’s main shopping precinct.

A spokesperson from SSEN Distribution said:

“We’d like to thank our customers in Kirkwall town centre for their patience today, as our engineers continue to work hard to repair a fault which has occurred on the local underground cable network.

“Our priority is to restore customers’ supplies as safely and as quickly as possible, and we expect to have everyone’s power back on by late afternoon.

“After that, our engineers will remain on site to carry out additional remedial tasks, including filling in the excavation where they’ve been working today.”
