Councillors to visit site of proposed new Stromness Co-op

A planning application for a new Co-op supermarket at the former West Mainland Mart site, in Stromness, came before members of the OIC’s planning committee yesterday, Wednesday.

Points raised included the look of the new building, how the noise of the refrigeration units may affect neighbouring buildings and, in particular, what provisions had been made towards adequate drainage and preventing flooding.

Three objectors were present at the meeting, who raised questions about how emergency services would reach the houses adjacent to the build, noise issues and whether or not the look of the building would be suitable for the area. In particular Stromness resident Cary Welling said she believed that the building design was “horribly boxy” and that people living in Stromness needed to be consulted on what they thought of the design of the proposed structure.

Councillors deferred a decision pending the outcome of a site visit.
