Critical report on maternity hospital
Orkney MSP Liam McArthur is calling on NHS Grampian to immediately carry out a deep clean of wards and equipment at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and convene an emergency board meeting in response to the findings of a critical report by the Healthcare Environment Inspectorate (HEI).
Many expectant mothers from Orkney use the services at the hospital, and it is essential that their health, and that of their new-borns, is not compromised, he said.
According to the report, independent inspectors made three unannounced visits to the hospital during August and September and found significant issues with the cleanliness of patient equipment and the hospital environment. Amongst the other failings it highlighted, it also criticised procedures for the storage of breast milk.
Commenting, Mr McArthur said: “The failings found during repeat visits to Aberdeen Maternity Hospital are deeply disturbing.
“It is essential that patients can have confidence that they are entering a safe and clean environment. In a maternity hospital this is even more vital, as outbreaks of infections can be life-threatening, particularly for more vulnerable patients and new-born babies.
“While NHS Grampian insists that the issues raised in the report have been dealt with, there still appears to be a strong case for a deep clean of wards and equipment to be carried out at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital. Moreover, steps must be taken to ensure that these standards are maintained going forward.
“I would urge the Chief Executive to convene an emergency board meeting to look at how this will happen, and to make sure procedures are improved to meet the requirements and recommendations set out by the inspectors. Those in Orkney, who rely on the services provided by the Aberdeen Maternity Hospital would expect nothing else.”
