On Sunday evening a coastguard rescue helicopter from Inverness transported a diver from the Scottish Mainland to Stromness for treatment in the hyperbaric chamber.

According to a coastguard spokesman the diver got into difficulty at Skerray Harbour, near Cape Wrath, and was due to go to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

However, in the meantime, an incident involving a diver in Shetland was reported.

The spokesman said this incident was assessed as being more serious, so that diver was taken to ARI, while the first diver was taken to Stromness.

The aircraft landed on the Market Green, where an area had been prepared by the local coastguard team, at around 6pm, and an ambulance was waiting to collect the man and take him to the hyperbaric chamber.

Earlier in the day Shetland Coastguard helicopter was called to assist a man who fell and broke his leg on Westray.

The incident happened near Grobust beach on Sunday morning, and the man’s son was able to raise the alarm with a nearby farmer who knew the coastguard station officer.

A coastguard spokesman said: “The local doctor attended as did the Westray coastguard team.

“It turned out to be a serious leg break. The coastguard team managed to get the man on a stretcher and up to the top of the slope.

“The helicopter was tasked from Sumburgh and took the man straight to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.”
