‘Dr John Rae’ in the running for name of new research vessel
Dr John Rae has been suggested as a name for a polar research vessel in an ongoing public vote.
The suggestions to name the Natural Environment Research Council’s (NERC) research ship RRS Dr John Rae has attracted 512 votes.
Dr Rae was a 19th century Orcadian explorer, who discovered the North West Passage and the fate of the Franklin Expedition. However, his achievements were airbrushed out of history.
Leading the vote at the moment are RRSÂ Boaty McBoatface, with 76,151 votes; RRS Henry Worsely, with 7,257 votes; and RRSÂ David Attenborough with 5,668 votes.
