Eday pier damaged during storms

The pier in Eday is currently out of action after suffering severe damage during weekend storms.

Access has been blocked and residents are being urged to stay well away from the pier for safety reasons.

Gavin Barr, Orkney Islands Council’s Executive Director of Development and Infrastructure, said: “It is important that people do not get too close to the pier until we have carried out a full survey.

“We are very aware of its importance to the community in Eday. An engineering team from the Council will be travelling to the island first thing on Monday to assess the damage and draw up an action plan. In the meantime, locally-based Council operatives will continue to monitor the situation.”
