Electoral registration system is changing
Orkney Islands Council is reminding residents about a change to the electoral registration system.
Individual Electoral Registration (IER), which came into effect on September 19, replaces the household registration system that has existed for almost a century. IER requires each person to register individually, instead of one person in a household supplying the details of all the people living at that address.
The Orkney and Shetland Electoral Registration team has written to 35,000 people in the Northern Isles to inform them of the change to the registration system and many will automatically move on to the new electoral register.
However, some will need to take action to join or remain on the register – which people can now do online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
If you do not receive a letter contact the Electoral Registration Office on 876222 or email ero@orkney.gov.uk.
