Emphasise safety in the oil and gas industry— Carmichael
With the country remembering the tragedy of the Piper Alpha oil platform disaster 25 years ago, Northern Isles MP Alistair Carmichael has said now is the time to make sure safety measures are in place to ensure an event like it cannot take place in the future:
“The 25th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster provides is an appropriate time to emphasise the importance of safety in the oil and gas industry.”
“We know that standards have improved over the past 25 years. The industry has a duty to ensure that standards are maintained so that we never see a repeat of the 1988 tragedy. Safety will become particularly important as we shift towards deep water exploration which will bring with it a slew of challenges.
“Flexibility and adaptability will be required by the industry to react to any new problems that arise on site. It is crucial that oil workers should feel able to report any concerns they have when working onsite without fear of reprisal.”
