Fersness Bay shellfish warning
According to the Food Standards Agency, people should avoid eating shellfish gathered from the Fersness Bay area in Eday.
Routine analysis of a series of water samples taken from the area by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) show that levels of toxin-producing plankton have reached the point where they could cause Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) and/or Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP).
Both potentially pose a serious risk to human health.
The OIC is working with the FSA, which is continuing to monitor water samples from the area. The warning notices will be removed – and the ban on commercial harvesting lifted – when the levels subside sufficiently.
