Festival of the Horse and Boy’s Ploughing Match
The annual Festival of the Horse and Boys’ Ploughing Match takes place today, Saturday, in South Ronaldsay.
The parade of “horses” starts at the ‘Hope Community School at 2pm, followed by the ploughing match at the Sands o’ Wright at 3.30pm.
The “horses” — children dressed in decorated costumes — represent the old ploughing horses of days
gone by, and the outfits are often passed down from generation to generation, as are the ploughs.
