Orkney Islands Council has contacted parents and staff to report the findings of an investigation into complaints about the management of Stromness Academy.

A letter from council chief executive Alistair Buchan has been sent to staff and parents with children at the school, and a meeting for staff has also been held.

In May, a letter of complaint, sent to Mr Buchan, prompted the investigation.

Signed by two-thirds of the academy’s staff, the letter cited “outrageous bullying behaviour” and an “atmosphere of fear and oppression” within the secondary school, stating that nothing short of a “thorough and robust investigation” would satisfy the signatories.

The investigation was carried out by an external education advisor, John Stodter, who conducted 70 interviews with staff at the school.

OIC officers and senior staff at the academy have since drawn up and discussed an action plan to address the findings of Mr Stodter’s report.

Wilfred Weir, OIC executive director of education, leisure and housing said: “”The concerns raised were taken very seriously and the investigation was thorough, fair and independent.

“I can assure parents, staff and pupils that the findings will be addressed in full in the coming weeks and months and we will work with all sections of the school community to ensure this.

“The staff and parents I have met and spoken with are fully focussed on the future and on ensuring that Stromness Academy continues to be a great place for pupils.”
