Get set to welcome the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay to Orkney
Orkney Islands Council is inviting the whole county to share in the excitement when the Olympic Flame visits Kirkwall next year as part of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay around the UK.
The torch will pass through Kirkwall on June 10, 2012.
Kirkwall is one of over 1,000 villages, towns and cities announced by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) through which the Olympic Flame will be carried by torchbearers during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. LOCOG has worked closely with representatives from a number of sectors in Orkney to devise the route around the UK.
OIC convener, Councillor Stephen Hagan, said: “I am delighted to be able to confirm the torch will be hosted here in Orkney in the Royal Borough of Kirkwall.
“For Kirkwall and our many surrounding communities in Orkney, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the county to celebrate and share in the Olympic spirit and play an active part in marking the countdown to the start of the games.
“It also provides an opportunity for local people to show a fantastic welcome for the relay, and to support members of the community who are chosen to run with the Olympic Flame.”
