Grid capacity and transmission charges key to realising Orkney’s renewables potential: McArthur
Speaking during a debate on the Scottish Government’s renewable energy targets, Orkney MSP Liam McArthur highlighted the urgent need to resolve constraints on the electricity grid and provide a more level playing field for transmission charging so that Orkney can realise its full renewables potential.
Mr McArthur said: “Parliament’s energy, economy and tourism committee report makes clear that the government’s renewables targets are achievable. It also highlights the need for both Scotland’s governments to play their part in making this happen.
“Two critical areas identified by the committee are the need to improve grid capacity and reform the system of transmission charging for islands-based developments. These recommendations are not a surprise and were part of the strong message committee members received when they visited Orkney to gather evidence last year.
“Orkney has the skills, natural resources and the appetite to help Scotland become a renewables powerhouse. What we need now is a more level playing field and an opportunity to be truly competitive.
“In return, Orkney can help deliver our climate change and renewables targets; an exciting new industry with global opportunities; and the jobs and wealth creation that are vital to sustaining our islands.”
