Housing options for refugees considered

If Orkney Islands Council offers to resettle two families from Syria in the county, two properties held for student accommodation could be used.

A report came before the council’s education, leisure and housing committee this afternoon which set out to councillors options for housing which could be submitted to the Home Office as part of the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme.

The councillors opted to follow the recommendation of the report, which was that two properties, owned by the council and currently held for student accommodation, be used to house the refugees.

It is stated in the council’s report that this option would not impact on families on the council’s waiting list.
