Island Games athletes congratulated at special event
Local athletes who attended the Islands Games in Bermuda in June will have their efforts recognised at a special reception in the Orkney Islands Council chamber this evening.
They will be joined by OIC councillors and representatives from various local sporting groups.
Forty-seven local people travelled to the Games with 27 taking part in an event, bringing home six medals for the county — and a host of personal bests.
The presence of an Orkney team at the games was made possible with the help of a grant of £200 per competing athlete from the council, as well as sponsorship from several Orkney businesses.
Chairwoman of the council’s education, leisure and housing committee, Janice Annal, said: “The Islands Games was a marvellous opportunity for our aspiring athletes to participate in a large event.
“Their efforts and success undoubtedly helps generate interest in the local sports and athletics back here in Orkney.
“We’re pleased to formally congratulate our athletes on their outstanding results and the superb crop of medals they brought home.”
