Pupils at Kirkwall Grammar School marked Holocaust Memorial Day with a candle lighting ceremony on Friday morning.

Holocaust Memorial Day has taken place in the UK since 2001 and provides opportunities to learn lessons from the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides and apply them to the present day to create a safer, better future.

KGS teacher Andy McLaughlin said: “On Holocaust Memorial Day, we share the memory of the millions who have been murdered in the atrocities of the past in order to challenge hatred and persecution in the UK today.

“On Friday, will be joining millions of others across the world who come together to pause, to remember and reflect on what we need to do to create a future free from the dangers of discrimination.  These are valuable lessons for our pupils.”
