Later opening planned for new school and hostel

A revised timetable has been announced for completion of the new Kirkwall Grammar School and Papdale Halls of Residence.

The two facilities are now expected to be ready later in the autumn for hand over to Orkney Islands Council.

Alan Moar, project director for the council’s Schools Investment Programme, said: “It is disappointing that Morrison Construction have had to revise the anticipated completion date for KGS until October 9.

“While the physical construction works will be substantially completed next month, a comprehensive programme of testing and commissioning must be completed by the contractor to demonstrate to the council that the building and its systems are fully compliant with the council’s initial specification.

“Sufficient time needs to be given for this, as this is a big and complex project and it is essential that we are satisfied everything is 100 per cent right before the new school is handed over.”
