Latest from local emergency co-ordinating group

The Orkney Local Emergency Co-ordinating Group (OLECG) met today for the second time in response to the severe weather conditions currently affecting the county.

The group, which brings together a range of agencies and organisations, considered a number of key issues linked to the overnight and continuing mix of strong winds, high tides, lightning, heavy rain and snow showers.

Scottish Hydro reported that 150 customers are without power in Orkney. The majority — around 78 — are in Papa Westray. Power was restored late morning to around 70 properties in Westray and the company is hopeful that supplies will also be restored in Papa Westray this afternoon.

Chairman of OLECG, Police Scotland’s area commander for Orkney, Chief Inspector Les Donaldson, said: “Our main priority is to ensure the safety and ongoing care of the most vulnerable people affected by the loss of power, which happened at around 4am today.”

Scottish Hydro expects to restore power to most of the other affected properties, which are scattered across Orkney, by late afternoon today. Anyone still experiencing problems after 5pm should report these by calling 0800 300 999.

Chief Inspector Donaldson said: “We would ask friends, family and neighbours to keep an eye on people who may be experiencing problems as a result of the loss of power and report any concerns to Orkney Health and Care.”

After problems this morning with the Orkney Islands Council phone system, anyone who needs to speak to a duty social worker should call the Balfour Hospital switchboard on 888000.

The OLECG meeting heard that none of Orkney’s internal and external air and ferry services are currently operating because of the weather conditions. Tomorrow’s air and ferry services are under review.

Chief Inspector Donaldson added: “Driving conditions can be difficult after heavy overnight rain was followed by snow showers. Roads were gritted this morning and will be gritted again later today. With more snow showers expected, and drifting snow on some roads because of the strong winds, drivers should take particular care on Orkney’s roads.

“Our general advice is to keep an eye on weather forecasts and keep in touch with transport providers.”

Anyone needing to contact Police Scotland should dial 101 or 999 in an emergency.
