McArthur secures ministerial meeting over structural funds
Orkney MSP Liam McArthur has again highlighted concerns in parliament that Orkney may lose out in being able to access EU structural funds in the future.
Having raised the issue last month with the deputy first minister and cabinet secretary for infrastructure, Nicola Sturgeon, Mr McArthur used the opportunity of ministerial question time today to seek an update and assurances that the specific concerns of the Northern Isles were being considered in ongoing discussions between both Scotland’s governments.
Mr McArthur said: “I have been working closely with the council over recent weeks in an effort to ensure that Orkney does not find itself excluded. Meetings with key EU officials are being arranged and should take place shortly.
“In addition, however, I sought assurances from the Scottish Government that the concerns of Orkney and Shetland were being raised by ministers in discussions with their UK counterparts. I welcome the assurance from the cabinet secretary for infrastructure, Nicola Sturgeon that this is happening.”
