Military flare found on Westray beach

Shetland coastguard are warning the public to stay clear of an “extremely dangerous” military phosphorous flare found at the Bay of Tafts in Westray.

The flare was reported to the coastguard by a member of the public earlier this week and was cordoned off yesterday, Wednesday.

Members of the military explosive ordinance disposal (EOD) are expected to arrive on Tuesday, November 19, to deal with the device.

A coastguard spokesperson said: “If anybody finds something like this do not go near it and do not touch it. Take a note of the location and inform the coastguard straight away. They are extremely dangerous.”
