Yesterday, Monday, Orkney MSP Liam McArthur  paid a visit to see the recently installed CT scanner at Balfour Hospital, and to hear first hand from staff about the improvements it is helping deliver for NHS patients in Orkney.

Orkney was previously the only local authority area in Scotland that did not have its own CT scanner.

However, following a lengthy and hard-fought campaign over many years, patients in the islands are now able to enjoy a service on a par with elsewhere in Scotland.

Mr McArthur said: “Having been involved in the campaign for a locally-based CT scanner since 2008, I was delighted to finally have an opportunity to see it in action today.

“I have long believed that having a scanner in Orkney was vital to improving patient care, not simply for those suffering from stroke but for patients with a range of conditions.

“Speaking to staff in the Balfour this afternoon, it is clear how much of a difference they have seen in a relatively short space of time.

“The feedback from patients appears to be equally positive, with many now spared the need to fly down to Aberdeen and an overnight stay away from home.

“This can be stressful at the best of times, but particularly so for those who are frail and/or unwell.

Mr McArthur added: “I appreciate that getting the CT scanner took longer than many of us would have wanted, but I am delighted that it is now delivering real benefit to patients in Orkney.

“I congratulate Kate Smith and her small team on the excellent work they are doing and thank all those, particularly Dr Bob Hazelhurst, who helped make the compelling case over many years for a locally-based scanner.

“There is no doubt that it will continue to save lives and improve care in the years ahead.”
