November rainfall highest in almost a decade

The total rainfall seen last month has been the highest since 2009, according to Rousay-based weather watcher and astronomer, John Vetterlein.

Mr Vetterlein recorded 190mm of rainfall in November, with the average for the month being 139. The previous highest he had recorded for the month was 192.8mm in 2009.

He also reported that sunlight hours have also been well below average this November and air temperatures have been 3ËšC below average for late November, with wind direction persistently from a NW to NNE direction.

Orkney also suffered under strong winds last month with gales in excess of force eight on ten days with severe gales (force nine) on four days.
