Open day at South Ronaldsay excavation
With the 2014 excavation at The Cairns, South Ronaldsay, reaching the end of its third week, the dig site is open to the public today, Friday.
The dig, now into its sixth year, is centered around a large Iron Age broch, overlooking Windwick Bay, although the archaeologists suspect there may well be Neolithic remains also in the area.
With radiocarbon dates confirmed that a section of the site was in use as late as AD1020-1155, we now have 5,000 years of human history in one field in South Ronaldsay.
The dig is open to the public from 11am until 3.30pm, weather permitting.
