Orkney FC leave Invergordon empty handed after 2-0 defeat
Two second half goals ensured that Orkney FC left Invergordon empty-handed this afternoon, as they lost 2-0 at the Recreation Grounds. Last weekends win over Thurso had lifted hopes of a first away victory of the season but after a goal-less first half, the home side scored two headers from two set-pieces to pick up their first victory of the campaign.
In a breezy but dry day in Invergordon, Orkney started well with Joe Wilson firing wide after being clean through. Invergordon were dangerous on the break however and Gideon Wilson had to produce a fantastic save to deny the home side going ahead. Chances were being made at both ends but at the break, the score remained 0-0
Invergordon were the better side at the start of the second half and just minutes into the restart, Â they went ahead courtesy of a header from a free-kick. With Orkney struggling to impose themselves on the home side, Invergordon added a second courtesy of another header, this time from a corner. While the away side did have chances late on, they couldn’t force the ball into the net, leaving them without a win on the road so far this season.
The result leaves Orkney in second position, six points behind Halkirk who will go nine points clear if they beat Golspie Sutherland this afternoon. Golspie Sutherland are one point behind Orkney but currently have two games in hand.
