Plans for Orkney CT scanner progress

NHSOrkneyThe new CT scanner for NHS patients in Orkney has moved a step closer, after Orkney Islands Council granted planning permission for the facility’s building work.

The contract for construction will now go out to tender and a preferred bidder will be selected in May.

The state-of-the-art scanner has already been ordered, although it has not been confirmed when the service will become operational.

Orkney is currently the only local authority area in Scotland that does not have its own CT scanner.

NHS Orkney chief executive Cathie Cowan said: “This is a big day for us as we move ever closer to securing a CT scanning service on island. I am delighted our planning application has been approved by Orkney Islands Council. An operational date for the facility will become clearer on completion of the evaluation of the tenders.

“It demonstrates our commitment as a local health board to delivering care as close to people’s homes as possible.”
