Point of Ness clear up plea

With Stromness due to host a national sailing championship in August, Orkney Islands Council is making an urgent appeal for boats abandoned on an area of ground at the Point of Ness, in Stromness, to be removed.

The UK National Snipe Championships will take place in the town between August 2 and 4 and local organisers are keen to make sure that there is not only plenty room for the boats taking part but also that the area looks attractive.

At the moment, there is an area of ground at Ness where a number of boats have been left for some time, seemingly abandoned. The area is owned by the council and is intended for recreational use, rather than long-term storage.

The lack of space has caused difficulties for other boat users, has led to increased dog fouling and has made it difficult for contractors to cut grass in the area.

Gordon Hill, the council’s sport and leisure team leader, said: “The UK National Snipe Championships will bring a great number of folk to Stromness and it’s important that the town is seen in its best light. The current collection of boats is unsightly and creating a poor impression for visitors.

“It’s already causing a number of issues and it could be a real problem once the event gets underway. I hope that folk will understand this and help out by shifting their boats.”
