Police initiative to focus on vulnerable road users

From Friday, July 5, until Friday, July 12, police in Orkney will undertake a week long initiative focusing on road users including pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and motorcyclists.

These ‘vulnerable’ road users accounted for 83 of the 176 deaths on Scotland’s roads in 2011.

In the summer months the county’s roads are busier with these type of users and also visitors who may be unfamiliar with local roads.

Police are reminding people to refrain from using mobile phones or other hand held devices while driving or while supervising learner drivers.

They also asked drivers to ensure their vehicles are road worthy and the appropriate seatbelts and child restraints are used at all times.
