It has now been just under two weeks since the return of the Orkney Sports Awards were announced, and now with just weeks until the November 20 deadline, the public are being urged to submit their nominations.

Led by Orkney Islands Council’s Active Schools Team, the awards have been set up to recognise and reward the hard work and commitment of local athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers who contribute, raise the profile, and make a difference to sport in Orkney. The awards are intended to recognise and reward the hardest-working individual athletes and teams in senior and junior sport for their efforts and achievements during the last year, as well as the people who support them behind the scenes.

Last year’s awards — the first in almost a decade — was an unequivocal success, attracting hundreds of nominations in various categories, with 270 people attending the awards night.

The categories for the 2016 awards are:

  • Sportsperson of the Year
  • Young Sportsperson of the Year
  • Team of the Year
  • Young Team of the Year
  • Coach of the Year
  • Young Volunteer of the Year
  • Official of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • School Sports Volunteer of the Year

Nominations can be made in a variety of ways: by email: active-schools@orkney.gov.uk; or by Facebook message via Active Schools or OIC updates Facebook pages; or using Twitter with the #OrkneySportsAwards2016 hashtag and post to @orkneycouncil.

Please include the name of person you are voting for and the category, as well as a contact email for yourself in order to get in touch for further information.

Nominations can also be submitted using the form set to be in this week’s The Orcadian.
