Quizzing the councillors at Stromness Academy
Members of the Pupil Councils in Stromness Academy will take the opportunity to discuss areas of interest with several West Mainland councillors tomorrow, Wednesday.
The pupil representatives have already discussed some of the detail of the new OIC Council Plan in various classes. They have been particularly interested in provision and housing for young people. Pupils also fed back how important transport, renewable energy and improved digital connectivity was to them.
With this background, pupils will be in a good position to put questions to the councillor panel.
Pupil Councils have become more successful in the school over the last few years, with pupils’ suggestions taken up in canteen options; establishing a bike shelter and encouraging more communication between pupil representatives and the pupils they represent.
Mark Colston, depute head said: “Pupils are keen to suggest improvements in the school. They review our school activities every year and give comments in the Standards and Quality Report.”
Neil Blance, depute head, added, “One of the significant leadership opportunities are the roles of chairing and minuting meetings, which is completed by S6 pupils. Good ideas are taken forward and acted on.”
