The cargo ship at the centre of a major air and sea rescue operation last week left Orkney waters in the early hours of this morning, Thursday, following repairs being carried out.

The 99-metre-long Skog, with ten crew on board, broke down, was drifting and taking on water north of Orkney last Tuesday.

Lifeboats from Stromness and Kirkwall were involved in the rescue, as was a Coastguard helicopter, as pumps were ferried to the ship.

The Skog was towed to Hatston Pier by the Coastguard emergency tug and assisted alongside by two Orkney Towage tugs and the pilot boat Kirkwall Bay.

The ship, carrying a cargo of paper, sailed from Hatston Pier just after midnight, bound for Clydeport.
