Road closures and parking restrictions

Motorists are reminded that road closures and parking restrictions that will be put in place around Kirkwall for tomorrow’s Battle of Jutland commemorations.

The events get under way with a special service of commemoration at St Magnus Cathedral, which will be attended by relatives of those who served at sea during the war, around 100 people from Orkney and a number of VIP guests, including the Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Anne.

Events in Kirkwall, including the service itself, will be broadcast live by BBC television and shown on big screens in Broad Street and at the Pickaquoy Centre.

Prior to the service, there will be a ceremonial march from Kirkwall Harbour to the cathedral via Junction Road, leaving the harbour at 10.20am.

This will feature the Royal Marines Band of the Royal Marines, Portsmouth, and the Band of the Federal German Navy, as well as the Kirkwall City Pipe Band.

To enable preparations for the events and for the outside broadcast, a number of roads will be closed in the centre of Kirkwall today, Monday, and tomorrow.

In addition, a number of car parks will be closed in Kirkwall:

  • Broad Street car park – 9am on May 29 until 9pm on June 1.
  • St Magnus Lane car park – 8am on May 30, until 9am on June 1.
  • Great Western Road (south) car park – 5pm on  May 30, until 6pm on May 31.
  • Albert Street car park – 7am until 1.30pm on May 30 and 31.
  • Castle Street car park – 6.30am until 2pm on May 30, and 6.30am until 6pm on May 31.
