The work of the Royal British Legion in Orkney received praise in the Scottish Parliament yesterday during discussions on support for veterans.

Speaking during a Scottish Government debate on veterans, Orkney MSP Liam McArthur highlighted the support in the islands for veterans, not least through the Royal British Legion.

Mr McArthur told the chamber on Tuesday: “As a constituency member for Orkney I know of the central role veterans organisations play in supporting veterans and their families. The Royal British Legion has over 2500 members in Orkney, making it one of the most successful and active anywhere in the country.

“It is, without doubt, a focal point for bringing together the local community, both members and non-members.  In so doing, it provides invaluable support to veterans in the islands.”

His comments came during an announcement from Veterans Minister Keith Brown on plans to create a Veterans Commissioner.
