Royal Navy Divers dispatched to Brough of Birsay
A team of Royal Navy clearance divers arrived in Orkney this morning, Friday, after receiving a call last night regarding an unexploded ordnance, close to the Brough of Birsay.
Police in Kirkwall were first alerted to the suspected wartime ordnance, yesterday morning. The access road to the Brough was soon closed to public access.
Now, after spending a night in Scrabster, the Clyde-based Northern Diving Group (NDG) have been dispatched to the scene.
According a Royal Navy spokesperson, NDG will carry out their evaluation of the item and, if it is considered safe to do so, they will carry out a controlled explosion.
