Sky Notes – Transit of Mercury on May 9

Fig-1

A transit of Mercury occurs when the planet passes between the Earth and the Sun at inferior conjunction with all three objects in, or very closely in, the same plane.

The Mercury transit on Monday is particularly favourable for Orkney with the Sun well above the horizon throughout the duration of the event, lasting seven hours and 28 minutes.
