Stromness Primary scoops award for best school design
Stromness Primary School has taken top spot in the education category in an industry award highlighting local government architecture and design.
The school, which was built by Morrison Construction as part of Orkney Islands Council’s £57m Schools Investment Programme, was one of 12 short-listed buildings in this year’s SCALA Civil Building of the Year Award.
There have been just three previous Scottish winners since the competition began in 2003. The objective of the competition is to promote the construction of high quality public buildings and formally honour excellence in design and construction.
The judging panel commented: “This project very successfully relates to its unique environment and local vernacular architecture. It is characterised by the careful choice of materials and form, and by well-designed and consistent detailing.”
