Theft from charity collection box

Police are appealing for information after money was stolen from the charity collection box at Betty’s Reading Room, near Tingwall Pier.

According to police, the theft occurred last Friday afternoon and the box itself, which was a small model of the cottage, was also vandalised.

The room provides a place to relax and indulge in a spot of reading, from the many books available, for those waiting to take the ferry to Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre. The once derelict bothy was restored by Jane Spiers and Craig Mollison — and a band of volunteers — in memory of their friend Betty Prictor, and opened in April 2012.

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to contact Kirkwall police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
