A six-year-old girl and her mother were airlifted from a yacht west of Orkney last night by Coastguard helicopter.

Shetland Coastguard, who co-ordinated the rescue explained they were contacted by the crew of the yacht, named Arctic Monkey, around 9pm.

The Sumburgh based chopper Rescue 900 headed for the scene, some 45 miles north-west of Orkney, and airlifted the girl – who required medical treatment – along with her mother.

On arrival at Kirkwall Airport the two were met by members of the Kirkwall Coastguard Rescue Team and an ambulance.

The pair were then transported by ambulance to the Balfour Hospital.
