Veterans head north on overland expedition
Orkney is set to be just one of the many destinations visited by war veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who are taking part in a challenging vehicle expedition throughout the Highlands and Islands.
Following the success of the ‘Vivaro Siberia Challenge’ in which three injured ex-soldiers joined them on a life-changing 12,000 mile overland vehicle expedition to far eastern Russia, Max Adventure Ltd founded a charity, Driven to Extremes, to help more veterans who are suffering from PTSD.
Between May 18-27 the organisation will be bringing veterans with PTSD on an overland adventure through Scotland to the most northerly point of the UK in Shetland, visiting Orkney along the way during their latest event.
In total four veterans suffering from PTSD including two Scottish veterans, one of which was in the Black Watch will be on the expedition.
The veterans will be driving themselves in 4×4 vehicles provided by Nissan and the ferry crossings have been generously sponsored by NorthLink Ferries.
Freddie Hunt the racing driver son of James Hunt (former Formula One world champion) will also be joining the veterans for part of the trip.
Driven to Extremes is a charity supporting those who have been diagnosed with PTSD directly associated with their public service. Such expeditions are said to aid the rehabilitation of PTSD sufferers.
The charity helps and supports former and serving members of all branches of the British military, as well as civilian emergency services personnel.
It works closely with other charities to identify potential beneficiaries, as well as receiving referrals from family members or direct contact from individuals themselves.
