Views sought on county’s sports facilities

The Pickaquoy Centre swimming pool opened in 2013.
The Pickaquoy Centre swimming pool opened in 2013, just one of several significant developments in the county’s sports facilities in the last five years. OIC is seeking the public’s views on the county’s sports and pitches facilities as they to look to draft a strategy for future development.

Orkney Islands Council is looking for public views on the county’s sports and pitches facilities.

A strategy for Orkney’s pitches and facilities will be drafted in the coming months, looking at the current standard and use of the facilities, as well as where future development on investment should be targeted.

The strategy will cover the full range of sports facilities available in Orkney including swimming pools, fitness gyms, games halls and golf courses, as well as football, rugby and hockey pitches.

Garry Burton, the Council’s Sports and Leisure Manager said: “There has been significant investment in Orkney’s sports facilities over the last five years with the development of the KGS Sport Centre, the new pool at Picky, new squash courts, and the new 3G pitches.

“Demand still exists from our local clubs though for further investment, and through the development of  a strategy, it will allow us to identify and formalise where investment is most needed. It’s important therefore that local clubs get involved in the development of this strategy.”

Two drop-in sessions for folk to come along and give their views are being held this week — one at the Stromness Community Centre on Tuesday, July 19 at 7.15pm–8.30pm, and one at the Pickaquoy Centre on Wednesday, July 20 from 6.30pm to 8pm.
